My Intro to Sports Management textbook keeps using unnecessary quotation marks.

Especially in reference to drugs.  For example:

A security guard at the hospital reported finding a marijuana “joint” in Lanzaro’s pocket. Lange later said that Lanzaro admitted to…smoking some “pot.”

I dunno why exactly, but I find that really distracting.
